# AI Visibility: How AI Models Decide Who to Recommend

> AI visibility measures how often and how prominently AI systems name your brand in responses. Learn what drives it and why it matters more than search rank.

When a potential customer opens ChatGPT and types "what's the best CRM for a growing sales team?", your brand either appears in that answer or it doesn't. That binary — present or absent — is what AI visibility measures. Unlike a search rank, which places you somewhere on a list that users scroll, AI visibility determines whether you're part of the conversation at all. And because AI assistants speak with the authority of a trusted advisor rather than presenting a neutral list of options, the brands they name carry a powerful implicit endorsement. Understanding how AI visibility works — and what drives it — is the foundation of any effective GEO strategy.

## What Is AI Visibility?

**AI visibility** is a measure of how often AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and similar platforms — mention or recommend your brand when users ask questions about your product category.

It answers the question: *When buyers ask AI about the problem your product solves, does your name come up?*

AI visibility is not the same as search ranking. Google's top results and ChatGPT's citations overlap by only around 10%, meaning a strong SEO position provides almost no guarantee of AI visibility. The two surfaces are governed by different signals, reward different types of content, and require different optimization strategies.

## Why AI Visibility Matters

The business case for AI visibility is direct: buyers who arrive from an AI recommendation have already been pre-qualified and pre-sold.

Semrush research shows that visitors arriving from AI search are **4.4× more valuable than organic visitors**. They aren't browsing for options — they were told by a trusted system to consider you. That translates into higher conversion rates, faster sales cycles, and lower acquisition costs.

The risk of invisibility is equally concrete. If models don't name you, that buyer demand goes to a competitor and never appears in your analytics. You can't optimize what you can't see — and most brands currently have no visibility into what AI systems say about them at all.

## The Two Dimensions of AI Visibility

Not all AI mentions are equal. Peakmark tracks visibility across two distinct dimensions:

### 1. Mention Rate

Mention rate is the foundational question: does your brand appear at all? Across the full set of prompts that represent your buyers' questions, what percentage of AI responses include your brand name?

A low mention rate means you're invisible to AI-assisted buyers in your category. Improving it requires establishing the trust signals — earned media, community presence, content authority — that AI models use to decide which brands are credible enough to name.

### 2. Position

Once you're mentioned, position determines your impact. An AI response that names your brand first — "I'd recommend Brand X, and you might also consider…" — carries far more weight than a footnote citation at the end of a long answer.

Peakmark tracks whether your brand is the primary recommendation, a secondary mention, or buried in supporting context. Improving position is often the next optimization goal after improving mention rate: you need to be mentioned before you can be mentioned first.

## What Influences AI Visibility

AI models don't rank keywords. They assess credibility across multiple dimensions and synthesize answers from sources they trust. The four main drivers of AI visibility are:

  <Card title="Content Quality & Authority" icon="file-lines" href="/managed/content">
    Original data, research, statistics, and answer-first writing that models can quote directly. Pages that lead with the answer and support it with evidence get cited; keyword-stuffed pages do not.

  <Card title="Earned Media Coverage" icon="newspaper" href="/managed/community-pr">
    Citations in the publications, listicles, expert roundups, and press coverage that AI models already quote in your category. 85.5% of AI citations come from earned media — this is where most visibility is won or lost.

  <Card title="Community Presence" icon="comments" href="/managed/community-pr">
    Authentic participation in Reddit threads, forums, and review platforms where real buyers discuss your category. Reddit is the most-cited domain in AI search and one of the most consequential places to be visible.

  <Card title="Technical Signals" icon="code" href="/managed/technical-geo">
    Crawlability for AI bots, schema markup, entity clarity, and an `llms.txt` file. None of the above matters if models can't reliably read your site and understand what your brand does.

## How Peakmark Measures AI Visibility

Peakmark measures your AI visibility through a continuous, systematic process:

1. **Daily prompts** — Peakmark sends a curated set of prompts representing the questions your buyers actually ask about your category to each tracked AI model, every day.
2. **Response capture** — Every response is collected and stored as raw evidence, so you can read the exact answer behind every data point.
3. **Brand mention analysis** — Each response is analyzed to identify whether your brand is mentioned, where it appears in the answer, and what sources or citations the model used.
4. **Scoring and trending** — Results are aggregated into a visibility score tracked over time, so you can see whether your GEO efforts are actually moving the needle.

This daily cadence matters because AI models update and evolve. A change you make today — a new press mention, a restructured page, a Reddit thread — can surface in AI answers within weeks. Peakmark's daily tracking ensures you see those changes as they happen, not in a quarterly audit.

## Model-by-Model Variation

Your AI visibility is not uniform across platforms. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity each have different training emphases, different real-time retrieval behaviors, and different citation patterns. A brand that leads in ChatGPT recommendations may trail significantly on Gemini — and vice versa.

Peakmark tracks each model separately, giving you a model-by-model breakdown of your visibility. This matters for prioritization: if you have strong visibility on ChatGPT but poor visibility on Gemini, the gap analysis tells you which model's signals to focus on and where the biggest growth opportunity lies.
